Thank you

Dear all,

Just a brief message to thank all visitors who dropped into Bethlehem while I was there. It certainly did make my stay much more pleasant.

Love,

David

Bob and Susan's wedding early December 2015

Our friends Bob and Susan finally tied the knot after 20 years together.
It was a lovely day!

I even managed to dance a bit...something I couldn't do today as my legs have deteriorated so much over four months. I can barely stand now.

There was Klezmer music and even Indian music...very mixed and good fun but very very loud....unreal!!

Castlemaine, veggie garden and my stay at Bethlehem which is coming up

We just spent nearly a week with our dear friends Jacqueline and Philip (J & P) in Campbells Creek, Castlemaine which was very nice despite the heat.

We also caught up with Helen who lives there and Eric, Jacqueline's son who lives a short distance from Daylesford. Visited Daylesford for afternoon tea with J & P. Went to a new Malaysian/Indian restaurant with J & P in Castlemaine.

Ross and I visited the very dry botanical gardens and another day had afternoon tea with Helen and her friend, David at an "Austrian café" next to the gardens. Nice strudel I was told.

Veggies:

Due to the warm weather, we've had an amazing tomato crop at home and zucchinis galore and a few cucumbers and a few eggplant. Can remember seasons where we ended up with green tomatoes.
Is it climate change or just seasonal variation? Who knows. You'll have to ask Donald Trump....he has an answer for everything!!!

Stay at Bethlehem, Kooyong Rd, Caulfied.

Next week, Ross is visiting his family in Portland, Victoria and I will be staying at:

Wednesday 16th March, St.Teresa's ward.

The hospital's address is
Calvary Health Care Bethlehem
476 Kooyong Rd
Caulfield 3162

Visitors welcome from Wed 16 afternoon till Monday 21 evening. Ross is picking me up on Tues 22.

Electric wheelchair

Just letting you know that my electric wheelchair came yesterday.
It's good to have some independence, but the reality of needing it as my legs give in is somewhat depressing.   I can still walk a tiny bit, but really very little.

We went around garden yesterday, but as it had rained the wheels got clogged with dirt which made quite a mess...at least we have floors and not carpet.

You can raise and lower the legs, spin around with actually moving forwards or backwards and recline the whole chair. The chair is quite long so our passageway which is 1100mm wide is too narrow to spin around in....have to continue to bedroom or bathroom for that.

Weber Concert Grand Piano

Dear friends,

Reluctantly, due to my illness, I have taken the decision to put my Weber concert grand on the market.
This instrument has been fully rebuilt and has a lovely warm tone.

If anyone is interested, or if you know of anyone or any institution that may be interested, please feel free to contact me, or to pass my email address on.

Many thanks,

David

Willow Margot

It is with great pleasure that I announce the safe arrival of Willow Margot, Julie and Michaels' new baby daughter who was born 2/11/2015. Such a lovely name Willow and Margot is our late mother's name. A lovely gesture as she died in 1975. All three are doing well and I hear that Michael has taken to being a dad like a duck to water, which is good and certainly not guaranteed at the ripe old age of 45.

Ross and I have only met Willow once, mainly due to my health. They were going to visit us this weekend along with Julie's parents who are visiting from South Africa but cancelled due to the extreme heat.

We look forward to seeing them shortly. Here are some photos.

OUR LIVES:

Not much to say....legs becoming very weak and we have ordered an electric wheelchair from the MND resource library so I can follow Ross in the garden without him having to push me everywhere. We are indeed fortunate to be able to borrow these things from MND's resource centre as a new electric wheelchair costs $18,000! He has more than enough physical activities in a day, so I'm looking forward to having a degree of independence and also, not tiring him out so much.

Apart from that I spent six days recently in a hospice, just to try it out and to give Ross a break. Staff and gardens were lovely, so it was fine.

Christmas Eve:

A dear friend is coming on the 24th in the afternoon. Ross and her will eat mains before we go to church. Ross is playing the part of Joseph in a play at church...Mary's hubby, I believe. Then we'll return home and have dessert. As you know, I can't eat, so my only pleasure is knowing they're eating well.

Happy Christmas and New Year everyone and Happy Chanukah to our Jewish friends.

All the best, meilleurs vœux,

David et Ross

Back again

Pas de dicton cette fois-ci.

Excusez-moi peut-être devrais-je mettre le beurre de côté et me lancer dans l'huile d'olive??

Hi everyone,

I haven't written for some time as hands are really getting weak and the weather's been freezing up to the most recent days so I haven't felt the urge.

Michael (brother) and Julie came up recently....Julie's sister and her immediate family have just moved from South Africa to Adelaide where she found a job as an art curator.  Very nice place South Australia and they grow lovely produce there, especially apricots!! I believe Michael and Julie are visiting them.

Julie's well and truly pregnant...a relatively small bundle from appearances, but all is well according to her doctors. They're expecting in November.

Anna, Ross's daughter had no. 2, Miles Anthony who is now about just over 2 months old. He had problems with colic earlier on a screamed a lot, but has started to settle down which is good.

Brother, Eddie is very happy to have another brother. He is sweet (when he's not throwing a tantrum) and speaks VERY well!!  He managed to say nebuliser perfectly the other week, after hearing it just a couple of times.

Nicholas (Ross's son), Sandy and daughter Audrey came to visit us recently. Audrey's very independent--is happy to amuse herself with toys and she loves going to the park. Audrey's turning 3 March next year. Don't know if she's going to kinder next year.

Apart from normal medical appointments we haven't been doing much. Finally, the weather has turned....at least for the last few days, but Weatherzone predicts cold weather yet again tomorrow (written last week) and for the rest of the week. We hope some warmth comes soon--the heating bill is prohibitive.

I try to avoid talking too much about my MND in these blogs, but it is one of the reasons why I started keeping a blog. So here's a bit of an update.

I look forward to some warmth as I feel the cold acutely, having lost around 30kg since my diagnosis.
Also, I am now physically useless, so at least I can enjoy the garden--however, it's not the retirement I expected. Most of my pleasures and my working life were manual--even lifting my iPad is now an effort. I had expected to be able to help Ross out on weekends or when home--I hate being waited on hand and foot.

I tried to mow the lawn the other day--a flat section, but realised after one row that both my hands and legs are too weak. Walking really is becoming a problem. I can still manage, sort of, but eneven ground is really perilous and I am certainly not sure-footed.

Apart from the odd attempt at a bit of puréed soup, I am fed exclusively through the PEG. So my greatest source of enjoyment, eating is now out. That's really one of the worst things to come out of this illness. I always liked food with texture. Salads in summer with greens (leaves)--simply not possible now.

Last week we had some pruning done to our oak trees as there was a branch hanging over the house.
More dead wood to be removed later and some other work elsewhere. Costs a fortune!

Our heating boiler is to be replaced.....leaking profusely and there are questions around their ability to repair it. We've lost confidence in it and don't really feel we have much choice. Another $3,000 or so.

Apart from that, we don't really have any exciting news, but our friends Bob and Susan who are tying the knot after about 20 years together in November. We are delighted for them. Bob decided that as he was turning 60, perhaps it's time and also, his mother is no spring chicken. Nice to do these things while your closest family is still around....and is he likely to find better than Susan? No!!!
